What Athens is actually like
The Acropolis is the reason people come and it more than earns the visit, but Athens has quietly become a serious city break in its own right. The last decade brought a wave of rooftop bars, third-wave coffee, contemporary galleries and restaurants doing modern Greek cooking properly.
The old city wraps around the rock: Plaka and Anafiotika are the picturesque quarters, Monastiraki the market, Psyrri and Keramikos the nightlife, and Koukaki — just south of the Acropolis — the residential neighbourhood that most visitors end up wishing they had stayed in.
The city is also the gateway to everything. Piraeus is forty minutes away and ferries reach most of the Aegean; the airport connects to every island with a runway. Two nights in Athens before or after an island week is close to free in time terms.

Things worth knowing
Buy the combined archaeological ticket
One ticket covers the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Roman Forum, Kerameikos and more, valid five days. It pays for itself at the second site.
Go up the rock early or late
There is almost no shade. Opening time or the last two hours are the only comfortable windows from May onwards.
Marble is slippery
Centuries of foot traffic have polished the Acropolis paths. Trainers with grip, not sandals.
The metro from the airport is excellent
Line 3 runs directly to Syntagma in 40 minutes for a fraction of a taxi fare.

Is Athens worth more than one day?
Comfortably three. One for the Acropolis and its museum, one for the other ancient sites and the National Archaeological Museum, and one for the neighbourhoods, which is the part most people are surprised by.
Is Athens safe?
Yes, with normal city-centre precautions. Pickpocketing on the metro and around Monastiraki is the main issue; Omonia is best avoided late at night.
How do I get to the islands from Athens?
Piraeus port is 40 minutes by metro and serves most of the Aegean. Rafina is closer for Mykonos and Andros. Domestic flights from ATH reach the larger islands in under an hour.
When does the Acropolis close in summer?
During extreme heatwaves the site closes in the middle of the day, usually between roughly noon and 5pm. Check on the day and plan an early entry.
